Imagine what a place would be like if once it was once the center of everything, but now is the middle of nowhere.
On the silk road East met West, where cultures and religions traded as much as spice and slaves. A thousand years ago Central Asia was the best and worst of civilization, but now is a forgotten place. There is nothing like sharing a cup of tea over a view of the mountains of China with a shepard who gets a few vistors a month.
It is said Alexander stopped his troops at the Tien Shan mountains and headed south to India, having been humbled by their heights. Personally I think he gave up trying to get a visa to Uzbekistan. I won't bother getting into the drama, but lets just say that the Uzbek government and I had irreconcilable differences and I wound up catching an early plane to Tel Aviv. It cost me Tajikistan as well, but Jerusalem is a hard gig to beat. The extra week will get me some more time in Israel, Jordan, Palestine and Sinaii (Egypt). Keep you posted..
